"Without the Perfect Guru there is no salvation."
The awakening that changed Bhai Sahib's life foreverBhai Rama Singh Ji was born in 1930 in the village of Chhariavli in Uttar Pradesh, Northern India, into a staunch Hindu family. His father was Vaid Chandar Pal and his mother was Bibi Lashmi Devi. He was named "Rama" and grew up with one brother and two sisters.
The turning point of Bhai Sahib's life came at the age of eight after hearing a sermon by Baba Rattan Daas. The Baba explained the suffering of wandering through 8.4 million life forms without remembering God. These words pierced deeply into Bhai Sahib's heart.
He asked himself:
"Why shouldn't I meditate on God's Name in this very life and attain liberation?"
As he began meditating, an inner voice repeatedly echoed: "Without the Perfect Guru there is no salvation."
Drawn by spiritual yearning, Bhai Sahib left home and travelled to Rishikesh, regarded as the land of saints. Living within the jungle, he immersed himself in Simran, continuously meditating on "Haray Raama."
Yet again the same message echoed within: "Without the Perfect Guru there is no salvation."
Discovering Gurbani
In search of truth, Bhai Sahib later travelled to Delhi and stayed with his uncle, working within the hotel trade. Opposite the hotel stood Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib.
Through work opportunities he eventually travelled to Indonesia in 1957. One day in a hotel room he discovered two Gutke of Sukhmani Sahib — one written in Hindi and one in Gurmukhi.
Bhai Sahib began reading Sukhmani Sahib with devotion every single day. For twenty-one days he continuously recited the Baani. Witnessing this devotion, the government officer he worked under told him:
"I respect anyone who recites Sukhmani Sahib. From today you are not my servant — you are my son."
Through Gurbani, Bhai Sahib experienced peace and bliss unlike anything he had known before. However, whilst living amongst worldly distractions, the five thieves slowly pulled his mind away from Simran.
The spiritual bliss faded. Bhai Sahib realised the emptiness of worldly pleasures and returned back to India, determined to continue his search for the True Guru.
The Perfect Guru
Bhai Sahib travelled widely searching for spiritual fulfilment. He visited churches and mandirs but his soul remained restless.
Finally, one day he entered a Gurdwara.
As Bhai Sahib bowed before Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, he felt a divine force descend upon his head. Listening to Rehraas Sahib, Kirtan and Kathaa, he heard the words:
"The Perfect Guru is Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji."
At that very moment, Bhai Sahib realised he had found what he had spent years searching for.
Journey to England
Bhai Sahib arrived in England on 18th January 1964 by ship at Tilbury. Soon after arriving he obtained his first Nitnem Gutka and began reciting Mool Mantar continuously.
Immersed in Naam, Bhai Sahib experienced immense calmness and spiritual strength. During this time he travelled across Europe with companions from different backgrounds and faiths.
Darshan of Guru Gobind Singh Ji
Whilst staying in Germany during one journey, Bhai Sahib faced a difficult situation that deeply tested his discipline and purity.
Throughout the journey he had continuously recited Japji Sahib and Chaupaee Sahib. That night, in deep prayer, Bhai Sahib begged Guru Gobind Singh Ji to preserve the honour of Sikhi.
At Amritvela the hotel room suddenly filled with a brilliant divine light.
Guru Gobind Singh Ji blessed Bhai Sahib with Darshan and commanded him to take Amrit and spread Gurmat across the world.
From that moment onward Bhai Sahib discarded the razor, kept his Kesh, and dedicated his life fully to Guru Sahib.
The Gift of Amrit
Returning to England, Bhai Sahib met Gursikhs at Shepherd's Bush Gurdwara and was introduced to Giani Amolak Singh Ji.
Shortly afterwards, the first Rainasabaee Keertan was organised in Southall during Guru Gobind Singh Ji's Gurpurab in 1968. Bhai Sahib was deeply moved.
An Amrit Sanchaar followed where many Singhs and Singhnees received Amrit and immersed themselves into Naam and Gurmat living.
Bhai Sahib devoted his entire life to inspiring others toward Amrit, Naam and Gurmat Rehit.
Mission & Seva
Bhai Sahib helped establish Amritvela Simran programmes and Rainasabaee Keertans across the UK. His mission spread across many countries including Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, East Africa, Canada, America and Europe.
Thousands were inspired through his humility, discipline and deep love for Guru Sahib.
Despite widespread respect and recognition, Bhai Sahib always remained humble and grounded in seva.
Whilst absorbed in Simran he would clean the Sangat's shoes and wash dishes within the Langar Hall, teaching through actions rather than words.
Bhai Rama Singh Ji spent his life searching for the Perfect Guru — and after finding Guru Sahib, he dedicated every breath toward Naam, Amrit and Gurmat Parchaar.
